Professor Ian Blair

Professor Ian Blair, Professor of Neurobiology, Macquarie University.

Ian is Director of the Macquarie University Centre for MND Research, a large multidisciplinary research program (currently over 80 research personnel) that forms a research pipeline connecting the MND clinic to genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, animal modelling, pre-clinical testing and clinical trials. The Centre’s goal is to make breakthrough discoveries in understanding the causes of MND and identify and evaluate new therapeutic strategies. Prof Blair leads studies to unravel the molecular genetic and cellular basis of MND and related diseases. In the past 10 years, his group has played a key role in most MND gene discoveries. His team uses these genes to develop cell and animal models that express the mutant proteins as tools to study the molecular basis of disease. These discoveries have been used to develop new diagnostic tests, predict disease onset and progression, and establish new models for therapeutic development.
